The full story

  1. How fast AI ships: every new model, 2024 to now. Three rows of thin lines for OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini, one line per release day, and a green row for all three together. Lines are far apart in 2024 and crowded in 2026. Typical gap between releases: 2024, 31 days; 2025, 16 days; 2026, 12 d
  2. OpenAI, like clockwork. OpenAI's release days from 2024 to October 2026, with GPT-4o, GPT-5 and GPT-6 named. Typical wait for the next GPT: about 2 months in 2024, 7 weeks in 2025, 7 weeks in 2026. Release days: 3 in 2024, 8 in 2025, 7 so far.
  3. Anthropic sped up the most. Claude's release days from 2024 to October 2026, with Claude 3, Claude 4 and Opus 5 named; 2026 in green. Typical wait for the next Claude: about 3 months in 2024, 2 months in 2025, 3 weeks in 2026. 4 release days in 2024, 10 so far in 2026.
  4. Google, fastest in 2025. Gemini's release days from 2024 to October 2026, with Gemini 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 named; 2025 in green. Typical wait for the next Gemini: about 2 months in 2024, 1 month in 2025, 6 weeks in 2026. Release days: 4 in 2024, 7 in 2025, 6 so far.
  5. September 2026, five labs: 8 release days. OpenAI 3 (GPT-6, GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6.1). Anthropic 3 (Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5). Google 1 (Gemini 3.8 Flash). xAI 1 (Grok 4.7). DeepSeek 1 (V4.1-Flash). OpenAI and Anthropic both shipped on 22 September, which counts as one day. About one every 4 days.

Each line on the chart is one day a lab put a new AI model in the public's hands. The bottom row is all three labs together.

New-model release days, counted from January 2024 to 5 October 2026:

2024: 11 release days, typically 31 days apart 2025: 21 release days, typically 16 days apart 2026 so far: 21 release days, typically 12 days apart

"Typically" is the median: half the gaps were shorter, half were longer. 2026 has already matched all of 2025 with three months to go.

Anthropic sped up the most. It had 4 release days in 2024 and has had 10 so far in 2026.

How the count works: a release day is the first day a new text model was open to the public. Image, video and voice models are left out. Previews limited to approved users are left out, which is why Google's Gemini 4 and Anthropic's Mythos Preview are not on the chart. Two models on the same day count once. A different rule gives different numbers, so read the direction, not the exact day count.

Many of these are small steps: a faster or cheaper version of a model that already existed. More releases does not mean each one is a big jump.

Only Google is a listed company here (Alphabet). OpenAI and Anthropic are private.
