Inside Grok's data center

Inside Grok’s AI data center: NVIDIA chips, Supermicro and Dell servers, and Tesla batteries buffering power swings.

Numbers as of 19 Sept 2026

A data center houses connected computers plus the power and cooling to run them. AI training links specialized processors to work on one model.

This is Colossus in Memphis, built by xAI to train Grok: the documented October 2024 installation, not its current size. That build had 100,000 GPUs; the toured Supermicro racks held 64 each. NVIDIA reports 122 days to build the facility and cluster.

NVIDIA supplies H100 GPUs and Spectrum-X networking. Supermicro supplies the toured GPU racks and coolant distribution units; Dell supplies servers too. Tesla Megapacks buffer rapid power swings as workloads change. Batteries store electricity; they do not generate it. The site's power has come from the grid plus on-site gas turbines.

Dell's CEO said in June 2024 that Dell was building servers for xAI too; the split with Supermicro was never disclosed. xAI is now SpaceXAI, part of SpaceX. Five systems, four companies. These are selected documented suppliers, not a complete equipment list or a supplier list for every big-tech data center.

The cutaway is illustrative, not the real floor plan. Outward dots identify components; they are not literal power or data flow.
