Who charges at Tesla

Ford, GM, Mercedes, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, VW and BMW. In 22 months, all of them sent their drivers to Tesla's chargers.

The full story

Would you have bet on this in 2022?

In November 2022 Tesla opened up the design of its charging plug for any carmaker to use. Then, one by one, its rivals came to its fast chargers (the Superchargers): • Ford: February 2024 • GM: September 2024 • Mercedes-Benz: February 2025 • Hyundai: March 2025 • Honda: June 2025 • Toyota: October 2025 • Volkswagen: November 2025 • BMW: December 2025

And more besides: Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, Nissan, Lucid, Kia and Stellantis's brands also have access.

When these drivers charge at a Supercharger, they pay Tesla, through the Tesla app or their car. Tesla does not report how much it earns from other brands' drivers, so we show no dollar figure.

Caveats: dates are for the US (Canada often came later) and mark when each brand's electric cars got access. Many older models need an adapter, some models are left out, and newer models come with Tesla's plug built in.

So who won? Tesla's plug became the standard. But its chargers are no longer a reason to buy only a Tesla.
