Who do Big Tech people fund?

Tesla looks like the only Big Tech company that gave 100% to Republicans in 2024. It was one man's money.

The story in 10 cards

Who do Big Tech people fund? Seven bars, blue for Democrats and red for Republicans: Apple 4% Republican, Nvidia 8%, Google 14%, Meta 18%, Amazon 23%, Microsoft 36%, and Tesla 100%, a glowing red bar labelled Elon Musk's own $75M+. Tesla's bar is one man's money; its workers leaned to Harris.Apple, 1 of 7, the most Democrat overall. And no PAC at all. Did you think the company wrote that check?

Companies cannot give money straight to a candidate. The bars count donations tied to each company, mostly from its own people.

At Apple, Nvidia, Google, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft, most of that money went to Democrats.

Tesla's bar is all Republican because of Elon Musk's own donations: over $75 million by mid-October 2024.

His total for the whole 2024 election ended far higher: at least $277 million, by the Washington Post's count.

Tesla workers leaned the other way: by September 2024 they had given more to Harris's campaign than to Trump's (Reuters).

The caveat: the seven splits are one research firm's count of public election filings (Sparkline Capital), stopped on 15 October 2024. A different counting method gives different numbers.

Why it matters: a chart that says "the company" can be showing one person.
