One Musk company?
Musk's companies keep merging into one. X joined xAI, xAI joined SpaceX, and now Tesla is in talks.
One company at a time, Musk's businesses are folding together
- March 2025: xAI, the maker of Grok, bought X (Twitter). The deal valued X at about $33B and xAI at about $80B.
- February 2026: SpaceX bought xAI, at a reported $1T for SpaceX and $250B for xAI. X and Grok are now part of SpaceX.
- October 2026: Tesla's and SpaceX's boards each set up a special committee to study a merger.
The surprise is the size. SpaceX is now worth about $2.0 trillion, Tesla about $1.47 trillion. Last quarter Tesla took in about twice SpaceX's sales, but SpaceX made about five times the profit ($4.4B vs $0.8B). That's why some reports say SpaceX could buy Tesla, not the other way round.
The caveat: nothing is agreed. Musk himself said calling a deal certain would be overstating it, and Tesla shareholders would have to approve.
Why it matters: if it happens, owning Tesla stock would mean owning rockets, Starlink and Grok too.
