Not so American

Budweiser, Burger King, Jeep, Holiday Inn: they feel as American as it gets. All seven brands here have owners abroad.

The full story

Who owns these 'American' brands

  • Budweiser: AB InBev, Belgium. InBev bought Anheuser-Busch in 2008 for about $52B.
  • Burger King: Restaurant Brands International (RBI), Canada. Investment firm 3G Capital bought Burger King in 2010; RBI was formed with Tim Hortons in 2014.
  • Jeep: Stellantis, registered in the Netherlands. It was formed in 2021 when Fiat Chrysler merged with France's PSA.
  • GE Appliances: Haier, China, since 2016.
  • Motorola phones: Lenovo, China, since 2014.
  • Firestone: Bridgestone, Japan, since 1988.
  • Holiday Inn: IHG, UK. A British brewer, Bass, bought the chain in 1988–1990.

The catch: foreign owner doesn't mean the jobs left. GE Appliances is still run from Louisville, Kentucky, where its biggest factory is. The owner's country is where the parent company's head office is.

Also: Motorola phones and Motorola Solutions are two different companies. Only the phone brand belongs to Lenovo.

Why it matters: the profit from these brands goes to the foreign parent company and its shareholders.
