Where AI plugs in

Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Google all bought nuclear power. They did not buy it from four different companies.

Numbers as of 15 Aug 2026

The full story

  1. A map of who buys nuclear power from whom. Microsoft, 835 megawatts from 2027, and Meta, 1,121 megawatts from 2027, both lead to Constellation, which is highlighted. Amazon, 1,920 megawatts by 2032, leads to Talen Energy. Google, 500 megawatts by 2035, leads to Kairos Power, which is private and has
  2. The restart: Microsoft buys power from Three Mile Island unit 1, which Constellation is restarting. The US Department of Energy lent 1 billion dollars for the restart in November 2025. The unit shut in 2019 and is due back in 2027, about a year early. In June 2026 regulators let it reuse another pla
  3. The rescue: Meta signed a 20-year deal for the Clinton nuclear plant in Illinois, starting June 2027, the month the state's support payments run out. Upgrades add 30 megawatts. Clinton was due to shut in 2017 until Illinois stepped in.
  4. The biggest cheque: Amazon's deal with Talen Energy for the Susquehanna nuclear plant is worth about 18 billion dollars to Talen over 17 years, to 2042. About 1 gigawatt arrives in 2029, 840 to 1,200 megawatts, and the full amount by 2032. The plant runs today; Amazon's share arrives later.
  5. The bet: Google's deal with Kairos Power starts with one 50 megawatt reactor, Hermes 2 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, due in 2030, with the local utility TVA buying its power. The rest comes from a fleet of small reactors by 2035. Kairos is private, so there is no ticker on this side.
  6. They kept buying: Meta signed for up to 6.6 gigawatts from Vistra, Oklo and TerraPower in January 2026. Amazon signed for 1.2 gigawatts from Vistra's Comanche Peak plant in Texas in September 2025. Google is buying from the 615 megawatt Duane Arnold plant in Iowa, being restarted around 2029. Which

Where each of them actually gets it.

Microsoft: 835 MW from Three Mile Island Unit 1, shut since 2019 and being restarted by Constellation as the Crane Clean Energy Center. Target 2027.

Meta: 1,100 MW from the Clinton plant in Illinois, a 20-year deal signed with Constellation in June 2025. Running today - the deal is what keeps it open.

So two of the four buy from the same seller. Constellation is a listed company, ticker CEG, and it now supplies both.

Amazon: 1,920 MW from Susquehanna in Pennsylvania, under an agreement with Talen Energy - also listed, ticker TLN. Running today.

Google: 500 MW from small modular reactors that Kairos Power has not finished building. First plant aimed at 2030, the fleet by 2035. Kairos is private, so there is no way to buy that side of the trade.

Two things this frame is for. One, the sellers are three, not four, and one of the three is not listed at all. Two, half of these deals are for electricity that does not exist yet - a data centre needs power on the day it opens, and reactors do not arrive on a software schedule.

That gap is why the same companies are also signing for gas. Meta alone is funding ten combined-cycle plants in Louisiana, about 7.5 GW, most of it landing in 2028 and 2029.

Next week: who actually builds the reactors.
