Who builds it all

The company that built its name assembling iPhones now makes more money from AI servers than from the iPhone and everything else combined.

Numbers as of 18 Aug 2026

Foxconn - Hon Hai Precision, listed in Taipei as 2317 - is a contract manufacturer. It does not design or sell the things it makes. It builds them for the company whose name is on the box.

For twenty years the box mostly said Apple. iPhones and MacBooks are still assembled in its plants, and Apple has been its largest customer for most of that time.

In 2026 that changed. Foxconn now earns more from AI servers than from smartphones and the rest of consumer electronics put together - the first time in the company's history. Revenue in the first quarter was about $66.6bn, and second-quarter net profit was NT$60bn, up 35% on the year.

What an AI server actually is, in this context: a rack. Nvidia designs the chips and the reference system; somebody has to bolt roughly a tonne and a half of hardware into a cabinet, wire the cooling, test it and ship it. Foxconn is the largest company doing that, and its customers on that side are the same names buying the chips - Microsoft, Google, Amazon.

Which is the part worth sitting with. The AI story is usually told as chip designers and cloud companies. Between them is a Taiwanese contractor most people have never bought anything from, whose revenue moves when their capex does.

Two caveats. The arrows show reported customer relationships, not exclusivity or amounts - Foxconn does not disclose what any single customer pays it, and Apple in particular also uses Luxshare and Pegatron. And a contract manufacturer's margin is thin: Foxconn turns huge revenue into a few percent of profit, which is exactly why it is not valued like the companies it builds for.

Next week: what a server rack costs before anyone switches it on.
